Contribute to Pat Hickey Assembly 25
My Dear fellow Nevadan, The upcoming 76th Legislative Session is critical for the future of Nevada. Attempts at Band Aid solutions during the recent Special Session will not work with a likely $3 billion budget shortfall facing Nevada lawmakers in 2011. Budgeting reforms and falling tax revenues coupled with a lingering recession—will make for extraordinary challenges facing Nevada lawmakers when they return to Carson. This and the prospect of 16-17 newly elected persons next Session, will make having--sensible and experienced lawmakers--crucial for this next election cycle. With the sudden retirement of Assembly Minority Leader Heidi Gansert, Northern Nevada lost a capable and veteran business advocate. I’ve entered the race as a Republican businessman who previously served in the Legislature in the 97’ Session. Besides running my own company for the past 20 years, I have worked in media, reporting and writing on public policy for the Nevada Appeal, the Nevada Business Journal, Nevada Policy Research Institute’s Nevada Journal and for KOH and KNEWS. As a fourth-generation Nevadan and active member in the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce and NFIB; I understand the need for lawmakers to grasp the stifling impact any tax increases may have on both large and small businesses in the state. Attempts at tax re-structuring cannot merely be a guise for untenable tax increases--like an across-the-board gross receipts tax. While we all need to “think outside the box” to solve Nevada’s problems--we can’t afford the kind of tax burdens that may cause Nevada to foreclose on the future because we can’t pay the mortgage. Receiving initial support in the primary is crucial in a strong Republican district like Assembly 25. I’m confident my early efforts will result in a win in the June 8th primary and in November. Sincerely, Pat Hickey |
